The short answer

An IP lookup estimates where an internet connection enters the public network. It does not read a phone or computer's GPS position. The result may represent an ISP office, mobile carrier gateway, VPN server or the center of a broad service area.

Country-level data is usually more stable than city-level data. A city result can move even when the device stays in the same place because providers change routes and reassign address ranges.

Why another city appears

Broadband providers often route customers through regional infrastructure. Mobile and satellite networks can centralize traffic even farther away. Corporate networks may send several offices through one shared exit, while a VPN intentionally replaces the apparent location with its server region.

Geolocation databases are updated on different schedules. If an ISP recently moved an address range, one database may show the new location while another still shows the previous owner or city.

  • Your ISP's public gateway is in another city
  • A mobile, satellite or corporate network uses centralized routing
  • A VPN or proxy is changing the visible exit location
  • The address range was reassigned and a database has not caught up

How to check the cause

First disconnect any VPN or proxy and refresh the IP check. Compare the public address and provider name before and after. If the provider changes, the VPN was responsible. If the provider is correct but the city is not, the database or ISP routing is the likely cause.

Check the same public address with more than one reputable database. Different answers indicate a data-quality disagreement, not a precise device-location problem. Restarting a router may assign another dynamic address, but it is not a reliable correction method.

Can you correct it?

The owner of the IP range normally supplies correction information to geolocation providers. Residential users usually cannot directly change the public registration. Report a persistent country-level error to your ISP and to the database provider showing the incorrect result.

Do not publish personal documents or a home address to prove a correction. A legitimate geolocation correction should concern the network range and broad region, not a household's precise position.

A wrong city usually means the network range is mapped to a provider gateway or an outdated database record. It does not mean your device is reporting false GPS coordinates.
