Public and private addresses are different
Opening an IP checker shows the public address used by the internet-facing connection. A phone or laptop also has a private address assigned by the router on the local network. The private address often begins with 192.168, 10 or 172.16 through 172.31.
Several devices can share one public IPv4 while keeping different private addresses. Make sure you know which one a setup guide, support agent or network tool is asking for.
Windows and macOS
On Windows, open Settings, choose Network & internet, select the connected Wi-Fi or Ethernet network and read the IPv4 address under its properties. The ipconfig command also lists adapter addresses in a terminal.
On macOS, open System Settings, select Network, choose the active connection and open Details. The TCP/IP section shows the locally assigned IPv4 and IPv6 information.
iPhone, iPad and Android
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, select Wi-Fi and tap the information button beside the connected network. The IP Address field appears in the IPv4 Address section.
On Android, open Settings, select Network & internet or Connections, choose Wi-Fi and open the active network details. Manufacturer labels vary, but the address normally appears under Network details, Advanced or View more.
Why the address can change
Routers commonly assign private addresses with DHCP, so a device can receive a different local address after reconnecting. Internet providers can also rotate public addresses or move mobile connections between shared gateways.
A VPN usually changes the public address seen by websites without changing the private Wi-Fi address shown in device settings. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data also changes the public network path.
